Breathwork
Breathwork is a structured, energetic breathing practice that catalyzes powerful emotional release and mental clarity. Physiologically, the practice quiets the frontal lobe - the manager or fixer part of the brain. The result is often an altered state, sometimes compared to psychedelic or spiritual experiences. In groups I lead for high functioning professionals, 8 out of 10 participants are weeping by the end and reporting significant positive impact from the practice.
The practice is done lying down with eyes closed, and accompanied by high-energy and encouraging music. I provide thorough instructions before starting, and technique coaching and encouragement throughout the session. I'm experienced leading both in person and over Zoom.
If a client wishes, I can incorporate breathwork into my coaching packages, and am also available to lead one-off sessions for groups or individuals. I work with my clients to develop personal goals and a set list of music for the session.
FAQ
Is this like yoga or meditation?
No. While yoga and meditation incorporate various breathing techniques, breathwork is different, and is often more energetic and impactful after relatively brief sessions.
Is this the same as Holotropic Breathwork?
Not exactly. Though similar in some ways, the type of breath work I teach consists of 20 - 40 minute sessions rather than 1-2 hours, and the technique differs. You might think of it as two different schools of yoga that have distinct approaches toward a similar end.
Is this safe?
Yes! One study reviewed over 11,000 practitioners and did not report any significant harm. Some contraindications do exist including schizophrenia, pregnancy, and ongoing pulmonary or cardiac conditions. I’m happy to speak with you further if you have questions or concerns.
